Radiohead<\/a> guitarist Jonny Greenwood<\/a> and movie director Paul Thomas Anderson<\/strong> are demanding that music from their 2017 film Phantom Thread<\/em> be removed from Amazon\u2019s recent documentary on Melania Trump.<\/p>\n

Anderson and Greenwood, who scored the 2017 Oscar winner, said in a press statement Monday (Feb. 8) that it had \u201ccome to our attention\u201d that music from the movie was used in Melania,<\/em> which pulled in a surprising $7 million last week in its box office debut.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile Jonny Greenwood does not own the copyright in the score, Universal failed to consult Jonny on this third-party use which is a breach of his composer agreement,\u201d the pair wrote. \u201cAs a result Jonny and Paul Thomas Anderson have asked for it to be removed from the documentary.\u201d<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for Universal Pictures, referenced because it distributed Phantom Thread<\/em>, did not immediately return a request for comment. A spokesperson for Amazon MGM, which released Melania<\/em>, also did not return a request for comment.<\/p>\n

Amazon MGM Studios reportedly paid $40 million for the rights to Melania<\/em>, plus roughly $35 million to market it \u2014 an approach that the Associated Press<\/em> said made the film the most expensive documentary ever. It was directed by Brett Ratner<\/strong>, a longtime Hollywood power player who faced widespread accusations of sexual harassment and assault during the #MeToo movement in 2017.<\/p>\n

In the wake of the film\u2019s release, social media began to buzz that it used part of \u201cBarbara Rose,\u201d a track composed by Greenwood for Anderson\u2019s 2017 film. \u201cMELANIA needle-drops some Scorsese-familiar pop songs and a bit of score from PHANTOM THREAD,\u201d wrote one X user on Jan. 30<\/a>, before adding: \u201cI assume because Brett Ratner is trying his hardest to imagine what it\u2019s like to be a real director.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear exactly how Greenwood\u2019s song was cleared, or what legal recourse the pair have to demand its removal. As indicated by the statement, film composers do not typically retain the rights to their music, which are more often composed as a \u201cwork for hire\u201d that\u2019s retained by the film studio or the producers.<\/p>\n

But a contractual provision secured by a veteran composer \u2014 Greenwood has composed the scores to Anderson\u2019s There Will Be Blood <\/em>and One Battle After Another<\/em>, as well as Jane Campion<\/strong>\u2019s 2021 Oscar winner The Power of the Dog<\/em> \u2014 could potentially give him more leverage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
