Oasis<\/a>\u2019 Noel Gallagher<\/a> has hit back at critics of his forthcoming songwriter of the year award<\/a> at the 2026 BRIT Awards<\/a>, joking that they can \u201chave it out on the red carpet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noel was announced on Feb. 4 as the winner of the honorary title, recently won by Charli xcx<\/a> (2025), RAYE<\/a> (2024) and Kid Harpoon <\/a>(2023).<\/p>\n

A petition<\/a> set up by musician L\u00e5psley said that the BRIT Awards<\/a> were \u201cdenying another songwriter\u201d by recognizing Noel despite the fact that neither he nor Oasis released any original material in 2025. The band\u2019s Live \u201825 tour<\/a> consisted of \u201890s classics, predominately from first three albums (Definitely Maybe<\/em>, 1994; Morning Glory<\/em>, 1995; and Be Here Now<\/em>, 1997), which Noel is credited as the sole songwriter on. <\/p>\n

At press time, the petition has 108 signatures and calls for \u201cclear eligibility\u201d around who qualifies for the award.<\/p>\n

Speaking on radio station TalkSport<\/em> on Monday afternoon (Feb. 9), Noel responded to the furor around his win. \u201cI haven\u2019t written a song for two years. I\u2019m not sure how I\u2019ve got away with that one, but I\u2019ll take it,\u201d he laughed. <\/p>\n

Host Andy Goldstein responded, \u201cSome people are questioning the fact that you\u2019ve won it and haven\u2019t written a song.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noel replied, \u201cWell, I think the BRITs is all based on record sales, and I\u2019m not sure there was another single songwriter that sold \u2026 I mean, we sold a million records last year. Didn\u2019t even get off the couch and I\u2019m not sure there\u2019s a songwriter that can match that. But you know, if anybody\u2019s got a problem with it, meet me there. We\u2019ll have it out on the red carpet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf any of those wet wipes\u2019 songwriting teams, all 11 of them, want to write a song between the lot of them, want to have it out on the red carpet, I\u2019m there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later in the interview, Gallagher added, \u201cI\u2019m in the studio now, so I\u2019d better do something soon. If I am honest I think they just were desperate to get someone from Oasis up there because it is in Manchester.\u201d When asked if brother Liam will also be attending the ceremony at Manchester\u2019s Co-op Live on Feb. 28, Noel responded, \u201cI haven\u2019t spoke to him about that, no.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oasis\u2019 material enjoyed a surge in sales and streams in 2025 owing to the 41-date global tour. The band occupied the No. 1 spot on the U.K.\u2019s Official Albums Chart across multiple weeks and reissued its catalog with tour-only exclusive physical editions.<\/p>\n

Olivia Dean and Lola Young lead all nominees<\/a> at this year\u2019s BRIT Awards with five nominations each. Confirmed performers thus far include Harry Styles, Olivia Dean and Wolf Alice.<\/p>\n
