I\u2019m absolutely blown away by the love and support from family, friends and fans.&nbsp;I love you&nbsp;all.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> An accompanying statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUlQDzVEdqC\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">published on the Dictators\u2019 Instagram<\/a> revealed that the diagnosis came after Friedman suffered through a series of \u201cseemingly unrelated symptoms\u201d over several months, including weakness in his hands and legs, which he thought may have been caused by a number of \u201cvery minor strokes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> But after changing his diet, beginning physical therapy and increasing his exercise didn\u2019t seem to slow the disease\u2019s progression or increase his strength, Friedman received the diagnosis. According to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/amyotrophic-lateral-sclerosis\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20354022\">Mayo Clinic<\/a>, ALS is a progressive, incurable nervous system disease that \u201caffects nerve cells in the brian and spinal cord,\u201d causing loss of muscle control, trouble swallowing and slurred speech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> Bronx-bred Friedman co-founded the Dictators in New York in 1973 with his friends bassist\/singer Andy Shernoff and rhythm guitarist Scott Kempner, with drummer Stu Boy King joining a year later. One of the original bands from what would become a fertile New York punk scene, the Dictators released their 1975 debut album on Epic Records, <em>The Dictators Go Girl Crazy!<\/em>, beating such scene stalwarts as the more well-known Ramones to record store shelves by a year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> The band whose sound melded the burgeoning snarly punk sound with a cheeky reverence for pop culture \u2014&nbsp;they did a grungy cover of Cher and Sonny Bono\u2019s \u201cI Got You Babe\u201d on their debut \u2014&nbsp;released two more albums during their heyday. Friedman appeared on 1977\u2019s <em>Manifest Destiny<\/em>, which hit No. 193 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and 1978\u2019s <em>Bloodbrothers<\/em>, before the group broke up for the first of many times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto lrv-a-font-body-m \"> Friedman then co-founded the New York power metal band Manowar \u2014&nbsp;who scored the Guinness record for the loudest band performance in 1984 \u2014&nbsp;with friend bassist Joey DeMaio and played on the group\u2019s first six albums, leaving the group in 1989. In the years since, he\u2019s played with a variety of acts including Death Dealer, The Spinatras, Shakin\u2019 Street, Brain Surgeons and his own Ross the Boss Band since 2009.
