Gene Simmons<\/a> has strong opinions on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and he\u2019s not backing down from them anytime soon. In a recent podcast interview, the KISS<\/a> rocker reiterated his belief that the organization shouldn\u2019t induct hip-hop stars, saying the genre \u201cdoesn\u2019t speak [his] language.\u201d<\/p>\n

While guesting on LegendsNLeaders<\/em>, Simmons was explaining that he thinks critics and official musical institutions can\u2019t be trusted to determine a band or artist\u2019s relevance when he brought up the Rock Hall<\/a> as an example. \u201cThe fact that, for instance, Iron Maiden is not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame when they can sell out stadiums, and Grandmaster Flash is,\u201d he began. <\/p>\n

\u201cIce Cube and I had a back and forth \u2014 he\u2019s a bright guy, and I respect what he\u2019s done,\u201d Simmons continued. \u201cIt\u2019s not my music. I don\u2019t come from the ghetto. It doesn\u2019t speak my language. I said in print many times: Hip-hop does not belong in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, nor does opera, symphony orchestras \u2026 it\u2019s called the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cBut [Ice] shot back and said, \u2018No, it\u2019s the spirit of rock n\u2019 roll,’\u201d the bassist added. \u201cOK, fine \u2026 I just want to know when Led Zeppelin\u2019s gonna be in the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. Music has labels, because it describes an approach.\u201d<\/p>\n

Billboard <\/em>has reached out to the Rock Hall for comment.<\/p>\n

KISS was inducted into the Rock Hall in 2014, two years after which Ice Cube earned a spot in the institution\u2019s hallowed halls as part of pioneering gangsta rap group N.W.A. The latter is one of several hip-hop stars the Hall has welcomed, along with rap icons such as Jay-Z, LL Cool J and Missy Elliott.<\/p>\n

When Eminem was inducted in 2022, Rock Hall CEO Greg Harris defended the inclusion<\/a> of the Detroit rapper \u2014 and hip-hop in general \u2014 by telling Audacy, \u201cYou listen to his music, it is as hard hitting and straight ahead as any metal song \u2026 It\u2019s a chest punch with a message and with a power and with a rhythm and with a band.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ice Cube also made his case<\/a> for why hip-hop deserves Rock Hall recognition when accepting N.W.A\u2019s induction 10 years ago. \u201cRock n\u2019 roll is not an instrument,\u201d he said at the 2016 ceremony. \u201cIt\u2019s not even a style of music. It\u2019s a spirit that\u2019s been going on since the blues, jazz, bebop, soul, rock n\u2019 roll, R&B, heavy metal, punk rock and, yes, hip-hop. Rock n\u2019 roll is not conforming to the people who came before you, but creating your own path in music and life. That is rock n\u2019 roll and that is us.\u201d<\/p>\n
