It\u2019s been 10 years since Jon Pardi<\/a> released his breakthrough album California Sunrise<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Apparently, it\u2019s time to reboot.<\/p>\n

Sunrise<\/em>, released on June 17, 2016, stomped the competition when it debuted at No. 1 on Billboard<\/em>\u2019s Top Country Albums. Pardi kicked off its promotion with \u201cHead Over Boots,\u201d then followed it with \u201cDirt on my Boots,\u201d both of which topped Country Airplay. That, it was widely believed, would be the end of the \u201cboot\u201d songs.<\/p>\n

Pardi\u2019s thoughts changed, though, when he struggled to relax during a post-show routine in 2023. After ripping through a concert performance, he found it difficult to free his heels and toes from confinement. <\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes when you\u2019re wearing boots all night \u2013 especially Lucchesi, it\u2019s real leather \u2013 they heat up and they\u2019re hard to get off,\u201d he says. \u201cI was like, \u2018Man, if it was coming down in prime time, and it was your time to go have some fun, you know \u2013 I can\u2019t get my boots off quick enough \u2013 that\u2019s a fun kind of saying.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n

Pardi carried that idea into the room during an Aug. 1, 2023, writing session with Luke Laird (\u201cPontoon,\u201d \u201cAm I Okay?\u201d) and Wyatt McCubbin (\u201cSounds Like the Radio,\u201d \u201cGood Times & Tan Lines\u201d) at Creative Nation on Nashville\u2019s Music Row. Laird co-wrote \u201cHead Over Boots,\u201d so he, in particular, knew the unofficial moratorium Pardi had placed on \u201cboot\u201d themes. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Well, he\u2019s the artist, and he brought that in, so I guess we\u2019re doing a boot song,\u2019\u201d Laird remembers. \u201cWhich I\u2019m fine with, but it\u2019s just so funny.\u201d <\/p>\n

If there were any doubts about proceeding, they faded when Pardi poured energy into the process. He was as enthusiastic in that setting as he is on stage.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a tornado in the best way, because he keeps a room moving,\u201d McCubbin says. \u201cWith \u2018Boots Off,\u2019 it was immediate, just boots stomping on the floor. I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if Music Row heard us that morning, just because it was so much energy, and so loud and fun, and honestly, it matches the the entire song. It started that way and kept going that way and obviously ended that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pardi had a bit of a melodic idea \u2013 it wasn\u2019t clear if he meant it to be sung or to be an intro fragment \u2013 but Laird fleshed it out quickly on guitar, and it created a grinding signature instrumental lick for the song. \u201cIt\u2019s like a little \u2018ronka, ronka<\/em>\u2019 kind of guitar thing,\u201d Pardi says. \u201cIt just kind of came together.\u201d<\/p>\n

That gave them a solid starting point, and they worked through the song in order, front to back, knowing they were headed to the \u201cCan\u2019t get my boots off quick enough\u201d hook. They cast it as a couples song, rather than a singles night out, introducing the characters\u2019 itch to go out dancing. When they reached the chorus, Pardi came up with a soaring opening line \u2013 \u201cHe is a melody machine,\u201d McCubbin suggests \u2013 before they even had words to go with it. <\/p>\n

That happened with the chorus\u2019 second line, too, with Pardi introducing a slight pause that, once it had lyrics, gives him a spot to take a breath and puts a half-beat hesitation before the phrase is over. That ends up working as a unique hook: \u201cThere\u2019s a whole lot more than a pretty good \u2026 [gulp<\/em>] chance.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat push is where me and Luke Laird look at each other and say, \u2018Oh, my gosh, let\u2019s do that,\u2019 because that\u2019s not something that anyone other than Jon Pardi sings in that room for the very first time,\u201d McCubbin says. \u201cAll of a sudden, it feels like something you\u2019ve grown up with and heard your whole life that\u2019s already a hit in a weird way.\u201d <\/p>\n

In verse two, they skipped the stereotypical truck when they needed transportation home. Instead, the couple gives instructions to a driver to get them back to the house fast. They\u2019ve presumably taken an Uber or Lyft ride \u2013 \u201cmore of a modern way\u201d to travel, Pardi says, before he breaks into a sarcastic snicker: \u201cWe\u2019re going way deeper than what the song actually is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eventually, the second and third choruses ran longer than the first, with an extra, energetic line \u2013 \u201cShe starts turnin\u2019 me on and turnin\u2019 it up\u201d \u2013 emphasizing the action that\u2019s in store. There\u2019s a chance they wrote that piece into all three choruses but ended up dropping it from the first along the way.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt gives the song a nice build,\u201d Laird says. \u201cYou still get a little bit of repetitiveness, but then, as it builds, you get those extra couple lines in there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laird produced the demo, playing that sig lick on a country-sounding Telecaster, though he intentionally kept it spare \u2013 two guitars, a drumbeat, bass and Pardi\u2019s vocal \u2013 knowing that producer Jay Joyce (Eric Church, Miranda Lambert) prefers it that way. \u201cIf you try to fully develop it too much, it probably just cuts into his creativity,\u201d Laird theorizes. \u201cYou do want to kind of leave it open. I\u2019ve had that experience with Jay a lot of times.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pardi recorded with his road band, augmented by three additional musicians \u2013 Joyce, plus guitarists Rob McNelley and Jeff Hyde \u2013 enhancing the intensity beyond the demo by incorporating snarling slide guitar. The twisty sig lick was reimagined with two electric guitars in unison \u2013 one rockin\u2019, one country \u2013 and they sped up the tempo by one beat per minute underneath the guitar solo as they built a track that\u2019s as much 1980s Bon Jovi or 1990s Black Crowes as 2020s country.<\/p>\n

\u201cCountry is the new rock \u2018n\u2019 roll in some aspects,\u201d Pardi says. \u201cIt\u2019s just a rock \u2018n\u2019 roll country song.\u201d <\/p>\n

With a touch of Will Farrell. After they tracked the instrumental foundation, drummer Kevin Murphy overdubbed an insistent cowbell. \u201cThat is all Jay Joyce,\u201d Pardi says. \u201cHe\u2019s the only guy that was like, \u2018Cowbell.\u2019 Then we heard it, and we\u2019re like, \u2018Okay, now we need the cowbell.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Pardi played it live for the first time on March 20, 2025, in Sydney, Australia, inserting it right before \u201cDirt on my Boots\u201d in the set list. \u201cIt just lit up,\u201d Pardi recalls.<\/p>\n

Capitol Nashville released \u201cBoots Off\u201d to country radio via PlayMPE on Dec. 15. It\u2019s boot-scooted to No. 41 on Billboard<\/em>\u2019s Country Airplay chart dated Feb. 14 after three weeks on the list.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt speaks for itself,\u201d Pardi says. \u201cIt\u2019s just fun, and it\u2019s my 10-year anniversary \u2018boot\u2019 song. Hopefully it\u2019s a \u2018boot\u2019 trifecta No. 1.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
