Ella Langley<\/a>\u2019s \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d soared to No. 1<\/a> on the Billboard Hot 100<\/a> dated Feb. 14, making her the first solo woman to lead the all-genre ranking, Hot Country Songs<\/a> (likewise a multimetric chart) and Country Airplay<\/a> simultaneously. In the same week, the single completed a 16-week climb to No. 1 on Country Airplay \u2014 the quickest for a solo woman without any co-billed acts since 2016 \u2014 after needing just six weeks to reach the top of Hot Country Songs, where it extended its reign to 11 weeks. <\/p>\n

Behind the milestone was unusually swift movement at radio<\/a>. Programmers across major groups, markets and formats say they identified early signals, elevated the record quickly and saw fast affirmation in research and listener response, momentum that helped turn a strong start into a historic week.<\/p>\n

Early Signals<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not any more cautious these days than in the past. In fact, we have more resources than ever to identify big hits quickly,\u201d Rod Phillips, evp of programming for iHeartCountry, tells Billboard<\/em>. \u201cIn this case, it was impossible not to notice the fan engagement at every level.\u201d <\/p>\n

Phillips says the first signs about the potential for the song, released Oct. 17, 2025, came provincially. \u201cThis really started from our local program directors responding to the music not only as a personal favorite but also via airplay on their stations,\u201d he notes. \u201cAdd to that the impressive consumption story, and you now have one of the fasting chart-climbing songs of the last year or more.\u201d<\/p>\n

The signals weren\u2019t isolated, Phillips adds. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t one thing we were noticing. It was, in fact, everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

From Add to Power<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n

In Houston, that alignment translated into immediate movement. \u201cEarly indications from the audience were over the top,\u201d says Bruce Logan, vp of programming for Audacy\u2019s portfolio in the market, which includes country station KILT. \u201cWe added in sub-power and took it to power five days later. The research showed it was a hit within two weeks of starting to play it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Houston\u2019s five-day leap to full power rotation (around 70 plays a week for KILT) wasn\u2019t an outlier; it reflected how the record moved in several key markets. Rather than building gradually through lower rotations, \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d advanced in visible jumps once early listener signals registered, which shortened the traditional airplay curve. Over the last decade, Country Airplay leaders have typically required around 30 weeks to reach No. 1; Langley\u2019s took 16.<\/p>\n

Organic Reaction<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n

For Christi Brooks, director of branding and programming for Cox Media Group\u2019s KCYY-FM and KKYX-AM in San Antonio, Texas, the song\u2019s appeal surfaced before formal research entered the equation.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, it was my 16-year-old daughter,\u201d Brooks tells Billboard<\/em>. \u201cShe\u2019s my music lover, and of all kinds of music, not just country. The song came out, and she knew every word less than 24 hours later.\u201d <\/p>\n

The song seemed to be everywhere, she says. \u201cSitting in traffic coming out of someone\u2019s car window, out shopping, even in the grocery store and nightlife ecosystem,\u201d Brooks continues. \u201cMy afternoon jock Brody is the DJ at [one of the most popular] dancehalls in San Antonio, and he said it was packing the dancefloor every time he played it.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

Sound That Cut Through<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n

Brooks points to both the song\u2019s traditional lean and its emotional tone as key differentiators. \u201cThe audience has so much variety in country to choose from right now that if you sound<\/em> country, you are probably going to cut through,\u201d she explains. \u201cAnd this is a heartbreak song by a female that doesn\u2019t feel sad and she\u2019s not angry. It\u2019s like she\u2019s accepting defeat gracefully.\u201d<\/p>\n

The regional hook was obvious in Texas, as well. \u201c\u2018He always loved \u2018Amarillo by Morning\u2019<\/a>\/ I should have taken that as a warning\u2019 \u2014 are you kidding me?\u201d Brooks says. \u201cShe put George Strait in a song about Texas without saying George Strait! So good!\u201d<\/p>\n

Beyond Country Lanes<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n

The song\u2019s momentum soon extended beyond country radio. In Houston, \u201cThe CHR here has started playing it in the past seven days,\u201d Logan notes.<\/p>\n

Brooks\u2019 sister station, adult pop, or hot AC, outlet KSMG, has also added the track. \u201cI immediately thought, \u2018Please don\u2019t kill it!\u2019\u201d she recalls, concerned about potential burn across shared female-leaning audiences. \u201cI\u2019m happy to say it didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the format more broadly \u2014 with \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d up to No. 22 in its third week on the Adult Pop Airplay chart \u2014 genre boundaries can be secondary to performance. \u201cWe have to play hit music for women 25 to 54,\u201d says Audacy vp of hot AC programming Steve Salhany. \u201cAnd whatever genre it comes from really doesn\u2019t matter. Early on, I could see the metrics of this record, [and it\u2019s] definitely a smash.\u201d <\/p>\n

Per that reach, the song grew to 22.1 million official streams and 12,000 sold in the United States Jan. 30-Feb. 5, according to Luminate. On radio, it ran up 34.4 million all-format audience impressions in that span. (Columbia, to which Langley is signed, is promoting it to pop formats, while Triple Tigers is working country.)<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Salhany isn\u2019t convinced \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d is a traditional country song at all. \u201cI hear a pop record, no more country than [Billy Ray Cyrus\u2019 1992 juggernaut] \u2018Achy Breaky Heart,\u2019\u201d he muses. \u201cI\u2019ve been doing hot AC since the mid-\u201890s. Whether it was Faith Hill, Shania Twain, Keith Urban or Tim McGraw, when you have hit records, you have hit records.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d concurrently debuted at No. 38 on the Feb. 14-dated Pop Airplay chart. On SiriusXM\u2019s pop channel Hits 1, the evaluation was similarly driven by listener response rather than genre alignment. \u201cElla proved her mass appeal almost immediately through listener reaction, and that\u2019s what matters most to us,\u201d says the satellite broadcaster\u2019s vp of music programming Alex Tear. \u201cHits 1 has always been about pop in the truest sense of the word \u2014 popular music regardless of genre.\u201d<\/p>\n

That approach puts Langley shoulder to shoulder with pop\u2019s biggest stars. \u201cWe move in real time with what\u2019s breaking culturally, while staying predictive about what\u2019s next, and Ella fits perfectly,\u201d Tear continues. \u201cPlaying her next to Harry Styles, Sabrina Carpenter or Bad Bunny feels exactly in step with where our listeners want to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Convergence<\/strong>\t<\/h2>\n

The six-week sprint to No. 1 on Hot Country Songs demonstrated early demand for Ella Langley\u2019s \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas.\u201d The 16-week climb on Country Airplay showed how quickly radio responded. When those curves converged atop the Hot 100, the result was a historically<\/a> standout<\/a> chart triumph, and the first of its kind for a solo woman. <\/p>\n

Radio programmers describe that culmination not as surprise, but as confirmation.<\/p>\n
