Para tal proeza, la Administraci\u00f3n Nacional de Aeron\u00e1utica y del Espacio, deber\u00e1 trabajar en conjunto con el Departamento de Defensa (ahora llamado \u201cDepartamento de Guerra\u201d) y el Departamento de Energ\u00eda (DOE).<\/p>\n<p>A trav\u00e9s de una publicaci\u00f3n en X, la Oficina de Pol\u00edtica Cient\u00edfica y Tecnol\u00f3gica (OSTP) de la Casa Blanca revel\u00f3 un documento ejecutivo con nuevas directrices para las agencias federales para establecer la hoja de ruta de la <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/es-oficial-la-nasa-confirma-su-plan-de-poner-reactores-nucleares-en-la-luna-para-vencer-a-china\">tecnolog\u00eda nuclear espacial<\/a> para los pr\u00f3ximos a\u00f1os. Con ello, dicen, se garantizar\u00e1 la \u201csuperioridad espacial estadounidense\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00bfEnerg\u00eda nuclear en el espacio?<\/h2>\n<p>En la actualidad, los instrumentos espaciales emplean energ\u00eda solar para operar. Sin embargo, esta fuente es considerada como poco pr\u00e1ctica para fines m\u00e1s complejos. Aunque t\u00e9cnicamente siempre hay luz solar, la energ\u00eda es intermitente, poca y casi siempre necesitan de bater\u00edas voluminosas para almacenarla.<\/p>\n<p>Los reactores producen bastante energ\u00eda continua durante a\u00f1os a trav\u00e9s de <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/nasa-apuesta-por-energia-de-fision-para-alimentar-misiones-en-marte\">la fisi\u00f3n nuclear<\/a>, dividiendo \u00e1tomos en cadena. Una variante de ellas puede usarse para la llamada propulsi\u00f3n el\u00e9ctrica nuclear. Para ello, tanto la NASA como el Pent\u00e1gono desarrollar\u00e1n tecnolog\u00edas energ\u00e9ticas de manera paralela, utilizando la estrategia actual de competencia entre proveedores.<\/p>\n<p>Los reactores deber\u00e1n ser modulares, escalables y tendr\u00e1n que incluir aplicaciones tanto para la futura vida en la Luna como en la propulsi\u00f3n espacial. Por su parte, el DOE deber\u00e1 garantizar que estos proyectos cuenten con el combustible, infraestructura y seguridad nuclear necesarios para que logren sus objetivos. Ademas, esta dependencia evaluar\u00e1 si la industria tiene la capacidad para producir hasta cuatro reactores en cinco a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>El plan contempla tecnolog\u00edas que produzcan al menos 20 kilovatios el\u00e9ctricos (kWe) durante 3 a\u00f1os en orbita y al menos 5 a\u00f1os en la superficie lunar. Mientras tanto, deber\u00e1n tener un dise\u00f1o capaz de elevar la potencia a 100 kWe.
