Durante a\u00f1os, la comunidad cient\u00edfica asumi\u00f3 que este \u00f3rgano vital permanec\u00eda protegido gracias a una barrera biol\u00f3gica extremadamente selectiva que regula qu\u00e9 sustancias pueden entrar en el tejido cerebral. Esa certeza acaba de derrumbarse. Un nuevo estudio confirm\u00f3 la presencia de pol\u00edmeros en pr\u00e1cticamente todos los cerebros sanos y enfermos analizados.<\/p>\n<p>El trabajo, publicado en <em>Nature Health<\/em> por un equipo de investigadores en China, analiz\u00f3 156 muestras de tejido cerebral enfermo, las cuales fueron obtenidas de 113 pacientes vivos durante cirug\u00edas, as\u00ed como 35 muestras de cerebros sanos de cinco donantes fallecidos. Las concentraciones alcanzaron hasta 129 microgramos por gramo de tejido, con una media cercana a los 50.3 microgramos por gramo.<\/p>\n<p>Al menos en lo que corresponde a la muestra del <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s44360-026-00091-4\">estudio<\/a>, la presencia del contaminante se consider\u00f3 universal tanto en vivos como muertos. La diversidad de formas, tama\u00f1os y concentraciones sugiere m\u00faltiples rutas de entrada, incluidas <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/los-niveles-de-microplasticos-que-respiramos-a-diario-son-mucho-mas-altos-de-lo-que-se-habia-estimado-previamente-estudio\">inhalaci\u00f3n<\/a>, agua y alimentos y hasta una posible contribuci\u00f3n de contaminaci\u00f3n quir\u00fargica, aunque esta no explica la magnitud del hallazgo.<\/p>\n<h2>Una extra\u00f1a vinculaci\u00f3n con tumores<\/h2>\n<p>Uno de los resultados m\u00e1s llamativos es que el tejido peritumoral (c\u00e9lulas sanas que rodean un tumor), donde la barrera hematoencef\u00e1lica est\u00e1 comprometida, acumul\u00f3 m\u00e1s micropl\u00e1sticos que el tejido cerebral de personas que nunca tuvieron tumores. Adem\u00e1s, cuanto mayor era la superficie de pol\u00edmeros detectada, m\u00e1s r\u00e1pida era la proliferaci\u00f3n tumoral. <strong>Los autores aclaran que esta correlaci\u00f3n no implica que los micropl\u00e1sticos causen c\u00e1ncer<\/strong>, pero s\u00ed revela una interacci\u00f3n biol\u00f3gica que requiere m\u00e1s investigaciones de manera urgente.<\/p>\n<p>Aunque existe una amplia base de evidencia sobre la presencia de micropl\u00e1sticos en el cuerpo humano, a\u00fan no est\u00e1 claro si provocan enfermedades. Por ahora, los indicios apuntan a inflamaci\u00f3n y estr\u00e9s oxidativo a nivel celular y tisular, adem\u00e1s de alteraciones en el <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/los-microplasticos-estan-envenenando-tu-flora-intestinal\">microbioma intestinal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hasta la fecha, diferentes estudios han encontrado pol\u00edmeros microsc\u00f3picos en los sistemas respiratorio, circulatorio, inmunol\u00f3gico, endocrino, <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/microplasticos-hasta-en-el-semen-y-en-el-fluido-de-los-ovarios\">reproductivo<\/a> y digestivo.
