La garra de un robot se precipita hacia un foco sobre una mesa. Me estremezco, esperando el crujido. Pero, de repente, la garra se desacelera. Empieza a hurgar en la mesa, como si buscara sus lentes en la mesita de noche. Coloca suavemente el foco entre sus dos pinzas. El foco sale rodando. La pinza la persigue por la mesa. Tras unos cuantos intentos, el foco vuelve a estar en sus \u201cmanos\u201d. El robot enrosca r\u00e1pidamente el foco en un socket<\/em> cercano, iluminando su zona de trabajo.<\/p>\n

M\u00e1s f\u00e1cil que enroscar un foco<\/h2>\n

En m\u00e1s de una d\u00e9cada escribiendo sobre robots<\/a>, nunca hab\u00eda visto uno que se moviera con tanta naturalidad. La mayor\u00eda son torpes, incluso cuando est\u00e1n controlados a distancia por una persona. De las pocas docenas de brazos rob\u00f3ticos que hay actualmente en el mercado, ninguno es capaz de enroscar un foco.<\/p>\n

He venido a visitar Eka, una empresa emergente situada en Kendall Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts, en EE UU, muy cerca del MIT y a un poco m\u00e1s de distancia en bicicleta de mi casa. La oficina de la empresa est\u00e1 unos pisos por encima de uno de mis restaurantes favoritos, llamado Shy Bird, un lugar al que vengo a menudo a trabajar con \u201cmis propias pinzas\u201d, escribiendo art\u00edculos para WIRED.<\/p>\n

La oficina de Eka es peque\u00f1a y est\u00e1 repleta de diferentes brazos rob\u00f3ticos, pinzas y manos variadas y mesas cubiertas de cachivaches extra\u00f1os de diferentes formas, tama\u00f1os y texturas: guantes, cajitas de tapones para los o\u00eddos, cepillos para el pelo, llaveros, etc\u00e9tera.<\/p>\n

Intento poner algunas cosas debajo del robot. Primero la caja de tapones para los o\u00eddos, luego un cepillo para el pelo y, por \u00faltimo, en un intento de hacerlo tropezar, mi propio l\u00edo de llaves, que tienen un llavero de felpa. Cada vez, el robot se abalanza sobre el objeto y lo pellizca suavemente unas cuantas veces antes de agarrarlo y levantarlo. Cuando intento tomar mis llaves de la m\u00e1quina de Eka, el robot se resiste un momento, luego las suelta y vuelve a centrar su atenci\u00f3n en la mesa, buscando algo m\u00e1s que recoger. Su dedicaci\u00f3n a la recogida es impresionante. Tambi\u00e9n da un poco de miedo.<\/p>\n

Un robot inquietante<\/h2>\n

Ver al robot de Eka en acci\u00f3n me recuerda a la primera vez que intent\u00e9 hablar con ChatGPT. Los robots son tan fluidos, parecen tan naturales, que no puedo evitar sentir que hay algo genuinamente inteligente, aunque no del todo humano, detr\u00e1s de ellos.<\/p>\n

En una sala de conferencias no muy lejos de los robots, los cofundadores de Eka, Pulkit Agrawal, profesor del MIT, y Tuomas Haarnoja, ex investigador de rob\u00f3tica de Google DeepMind, exponen su visi\u00f3n de la nueva y curiosa m\u00e1quina. \u00abHace un par de a\u00f1os, nos dimos cuenta de que la destreza por fin se puede descifrar\u00bb, se\u00f1ala Agrawal. Las demostraciones del robot Eka sugieren que el enfoque de la empresa deber\u00eda permitir una destreza rob\u00f3tica real con un mayor entrenamiento. De ser as\u00ed, podr\u00eda revolucionar el uso de los robots, no solo en f\u00e1bricas y almacenes, sino tambi\u00e9n en tiendas, restaurantes e incluso hogares. \u201cBillones de d\u00f3lares pasan por las manos humanas\u201d, declara Agrawal. \u201cPara m\u00ed, este es el mayor problema del mundo que hay que resolver\u201d.<\/p>\n
