Son indivisibles por definici\u00f3n, es decir, no contienen nada m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o y marcan un l\u00edmite en la escala de lo diminuto. La f\u00edsica moderna ya identific\u00f3 varias de ellas y sigue buscando otras. Entre las m\u00e1s conocidas est\u00e1 el fot\u00f3n, la unidad m\u00ednima de la luz y de toda radiaci\u00f3n electromagn\u00e9tica.<\/p>\n<p>El fot\u00f3n obedece esa misma regla: no puedes partirlo. Sin embargo, bajo condiciones espec\u00edficas y aprovechando su naturaleza luminosa, s\u00ed puedes interrumpir un pulso que lo contiene. \u00bfQu\u00e9 ocurre entonces? Un equipo de investigadores de la Universidad de Oslo decidi\u00f3 explorar ese escenario y termin\u00f3 en <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/los-fisicos-no-estan-de-acuerdo-en-casi-nada-sobre-el-universo-muestra-una-inmensa-encuesta\">un territorio extra\u00f1o<\/a>. Lo que queda despu\u00e9s del \u201ccorte\u201d no es ni otro fot\u00f3n ni una mezcla de un fot\u00f3n y el vac\u00edo, sino una superposici\u00f3n infinita de fotones. La part\u00edcula atraviesa un obturador \u00f3ptico. Imagina un espejo que aparece justo a tiempo para bloquear parte de un pulso de luz. En este escenario, el espejo act\u00faa lo bastante r\u00e1pido como para interceptar al fot\u00f3n a mitad del camino.<\/p>\n<p>Ahora conviene hacer una prudente aclaraci\u00f3n. Las part\u00edculas fundamentales pueden imaginarse como peque\u00f1as unidades o \u201cpelotitas\u201d, pero la f\u00edsica moderna las interpreta como campos excitados, vibraciones m\u00ednimas de algo que permea el espacio. Un fot\u00f3n, por ejemplo, es una excitaci\u00f3n del campo electromagn\u00e9tico. Esta descripci\u00f3n ayuda a entender por qu\u00e9 las part\u00edculas cu\u00e1nticas pueden exhibir propiedades tanto ondulatorias como corpusculares, una de las caracter\u00edsticas m\u00e1s conocidas de la <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/un-experimento-cuantico-podria-cambiar-como-entendemos-la-relacion-entre-causa-y-efecto\">mec\u00e1nica cu\u00e1ntica<\/a>. Por tanto, al imaginar la divisi\u00f3n de un fot\u00f3n es mejor pensar en la interrupci\u00f3n de una ola, m\u00e1s que un cuchillo que parte un objeto en dos.<\/p>\n<p>Los investigadores analizaron el estado cu\u00e1ntico que queda despu\u00e9s del corte. Aqu\u00ed empieza lo raro. El espejo intercepta al fot\u00f3n y luego desaparece. Esa acci\u00f3n perturba el campo electromagn\u00e9tico. La perturbaci\u00f3n indica que retirar el espejo inyecta energ\u00eda en el sistema y genera <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/crean-la-superposicion-cuantica-mas-grande-jamas-observada-miles-de-atomos-desafian-el-limite-entre-lo-grande-y-lo-pequeno\">nuevas excitaciones en el campo<\/a>. El resultado no es una ola m\u00e1s peque\u00f1a, sino algo m\u00e1s parecido a una tormenta.<\/p>\n<p>Matem\u00e1ticamente, el estado final incluye contribuciones de cero fotones, uno, dos, tres y as\u00ed hasta el infinito. Al intentar cortar una part\u00edcula indivisible, el proceso crea part\u00edculas nuevas. El trabajo aclara que el fen\u00f3meno no viola ninguna ley f\u00edsica.<\/p>\n<p>Luego ocurre algo a\u00fan m\u00e1s curioso. Cuando los cient\u00edficos midieron el campo por regiones, las infinitas part\u00edculas se volvieron invisibles. Si observas la parte anterior al corte, el sistema se comporta como un fot\u00f3n normal. Si miras la parte posterior, encuentras vac\u00edo, como si el fot\u00f3n nunca hubiera pasado. El corte existi\u00f3, pero el enjambre de part\u00edculas solo aparece cuando analizas el sistema completo.<\/p>\n<p>El art\u00edculo no intenta hacer una declaraci\u00f3n cosmol\u00f3gica ni especular sobre la estructura del universo. Esos fotones \u201cextra\u201d no estaban dentro del fot\u00f3n original ni llegaron de otro lugar. Surgen como una consecuencia directa de manipular el campo en su nivel m\u00e1s b\u00e1sico.<\/p>\n<p>Cuando los cient\u00edficos manipulan fotones de esa manera tan particular, el sistema responde con comportamientos poco intuitivos.
