Los debates giran en torno al sobrediagn\u00f3stico, cambios en criterios, influencia de redes sociales, entre otros factores.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<hr>\n<p>Hasta ahora, <strong>se consideraba que la atenci\u00f3n selectiva depend\u00eda principalmente del funcionamiento de la corteza prefrontal<\/strong>, una regi\u00f3n situada en la parte anterior de los l\u00f3bulos frontales y vinculada con funciones ejecutivas como la planificaci\u00f3n, la toma de decisiones, el autocontrol y la regulaci\u00f3n emocional. Aunque esta estructura est\u00e1 m\u00e1s desarrollada en primates, tanto humanos como no humanos, que en otros vertebrados, muchas especies con una corteza menos compleja tambi\u00e9n son capaces de enfocar su atenci\u00f3n y concentrarse en objetivos concretos.<\/p>\n<p>Para entender c\u00f3mo surgi\u00f3 esta capacidad a lo largo de la evoluci\u00f3n, investigadores de la Universidad Johns Hopkins dise\u00f1aron un experimento con ratones orientado a estudiar ciertas neuronas del tronco encef\u00e1lico, una regi\u00f3n ubicada en la base del cerebro que conecta el enc\u00e9falo con la m\u00e9dula espinal.<\/p>\n<h2>De la supervivencia a la atenci\u00f3n selectiva espacial<\/h2>\n<p>Ninad Kothari, investigador posdoctoral del Departamento de Ciencias Psicol\u00f3gicas y Cerebrales de la universidad y autor principal del estudio, explica que \u201csi nos remontamos a la evoluci\u00f3n, durante cientos de millones de a\u00f1os, las aves y los peces <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/pez-cebra-reconoce-niveles-de-oxigeno-en-agua-al-probarlos\">han tenido esta capacidad.<\/a> Y, por lo general, no poseen una corteza prefrontal muy desarrollada, as\u00ed que \u00bfc\u00f3mo resuelve el cerebro este problema? Logramos identificar una regi\u00f3n evolutivamente antigua en el tronco encef\u00e1lico que proporciona esta capacidad\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>De acuerdo con la teor\u00eda del cerebro tri\u00fanico, desarrollada por el neurocient\u00edfico estadounidense Paul MacLean, el tronco encef\u00e1lico apareci\u00f3 durante las primeras etapas de la evoluci\u00f3n cerebral de los vertebrados y est\u00e1 relacionado con mecanismos esenciales para la supervivencia, como los instintos primarios y funciones autom\u00e1ticas b\u00e1sicas, entre ellas la respiraci\u00f3n y el ritmo card\u00edaco.<\/p>\n<p>Los resultados del nuevo trabajo sugieren que esta regi\u00f3n no solo participa en procesos fundamentales para la supervivencia, sino que tambi\u00e9n <strong>desempe\u00f1a un papel decisivo en una capacidad cognitiva compleja<\/strong>: seleccionar, entre m\u00faltiples alternativas, aquella que merece atenci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>La investigaci\u00f3n se centr\u00f3 en ciertas neuronas inhibidoras del tronco encef\u00e1lico denominadas PLTi. Su funci\u00f3n consiste en reducir o bloquear determinadas actividades neuronales para evitar que el cerebro se sobreestimule ante informaci\u00f3n potencialmente irrelevante.<\/p>\n<p>Los cient\u00edficos trabajaron con un grupo de ratones entrenados para realizar una tarea de atenci\u00f3n selectiva semejante a las pruebas utilizadas en humanos para evaluar esta capacidad.<\/p>\n<p>Los animales fueron expuestos a una pantalla con diversos <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/puerta-en-el-cerebro-conduce-a-la-percepcion-consciente\">est\u00edmulos visuales<\/a>. Para obtener una recompensa, deb\u00edan identificar con el hocico un punto ubicado en una posici\u00f3n espec\u00edfica, ignorando el resto de las se\u00f1ales que actuaban como distractores.
