Del mismo modo, dos part\u00edculas de luz visible no suelen combinarse espont\u00e1neamente para generar una sola part\u00edcula de mayor energ\u00eda. Sin embargo, un equipo de investigadores acaba de demostrar que esto puede lograrse mediante un cristal especialmente dise\u00f1ado para reorganizar esa energ\u00eda y transformar parte de la luz solar en radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta.<\/p>\n<p>Muchas de las reacciones qu\u00edmicas m\u00e1s \u00fatiles para la industria necesitan un impulso energ\u00e9tico que la <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/google-planea-mandar-centros-de-datos-al-espacio-para-alimentar-la-ia-con-luz-solar\">luz visible<\/a> no puede proporcionar. Aunque la exposici\u00f3n excesiva a la radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta puede ser perjudicial para las personas, esta tambi\u00e9n se utiliza para desinfectar agua, endurecer resinas en impresoras 3D, activar fotocatalizadores y acelerar determinados procesos qu\u00edmicos.<\/p>\n<p>El problema es que solo una peque\u00f1a fracci\u00f3n de la radiaci\u00f3n solar que alcanza la superficie terrestre corresponde al <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/por-que-los-bosques-brillan-en-dias-de-tormenta-y-como-lograron-grabarlo-por-primera-vez\">ultravioleta<\/a>. La atm\u00f3sfera y la capa de ozono filtran gran parte de ella antes de que llegue al suelo. El fen\u00f3meno en el que se basa, conocido como conversi\u00f3n ascendente de fotones, no es nuevo, pero durante d\u00e9cadas ha funcionado principalmente en soluciones l\u00edquidas o materiales blandos.<\/p>\n<p>La innovaci\u00f3n del equipo consiste en haber dise\u00f1ado una estructura cristalina capaz de realizar este proceso en estado s\u00f3lido, sin sufrir las p\u00e9rdidas energ\u00e9ticas que normalmente aparecen cuando las mol\u00e9culas se empaquetan estrechamente. Seg\u00fan la publicaci\u00f3n en <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-026-73898-0\"><em>Nature Communications<\/em><\/a>, esta arquitectura permite que la energ\u00eda se desplace por el material sin disiparse con rapidez, una de las principales limitaciones que hab\u00edan frenado esta tecnolog\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEsto significa que se producen aproximadamente dos fotones UV por cada cien fotones de luz visible absorbidos. Puede parecer poco, pero funciona solo con la luz solar natural. La mayor\u00eda de los materiales de estado s\u00f3lido no pueden lograr esto ni siquiera con una intensidad de luz mucho mayor\u00bb, dijo Yoichi Sasaki, autor principal del estudio, en un <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/multimedia\/1136731\">comunicado de prensa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Aunque la eficiencia a\u00fan est\u00e1 lejos de la necesaria para aplicaciones comerciales, el resultado acerca esta tecnolog\u00eda a formatos que alg\u00fan d\u00eda podr\u00edan integrarse en dispositivos pr\u00e1cticos. En teor\u00eda, materiales de este tipo podr\u00edan incorporarse a paneles solares, recubrimientos para ventanas o superficies capaces de aprovechar la luz solar para impulsar procesos de descontaminaci\u00f3n, purificaci\u00f3n o <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/la-confusion-entre-gotas-y-aerosoles-que-costo-tiempo-y-vidas-durante-la-pandemia-de-covid\">desinfecci\u00f3n<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>M\u00e1s all\u00e1 de las aplicaciones inmediatas, la fotoconversi\u00f3n ascendente representa una de las estrategias m\u00e1s ambiciosas de la ciencia de materiales contempor\u00e1nea. En lugar de limitarse a capturar la energ\u00eda de la luz, los investigadores buscan reorganizarla y concentrarla en formas m\u00e1s \u00fatiles.
