Aproximadamente 100,000 mueren. Muchos de estos incidentes ocurren en zonas rurales donde es dif\u00edcil encontrar un ant\u00eddoto eficaz.<\/p>\n<p>Las antitoxinas utilizadas para tratar las mordeduras se elaboran a partir de anticuerpos obtenidos mediante la inyecci\u00f3n del propio veneno en animales grandes, como los caballos. El m\u00e9todo de fabricaci\u00f3n se ha mantenido pr\u00e1cticamente inalterado durante m\u00e1s de 100 a\u00f1os desde su creaci\u00f3n en el siglo XIX. Pero su producci\u00f3n no solo es costosa, sino que tambi\u00e9n presenta desaf\u00edos, como la variabilidad en su eficacia seg\u00fan el tipo de <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/galerias\/seis-de-las-serpientes-mas-venenosas-del-mundo\">serpiente<\/a> y el riesgo de reacciones inmunitarias graves como la anafilaxia y la enfermedad del suero.<\/p>\n<p>Un equipo de investigaci\u00f3n liderado por la Universidad de Maryland y la Universidad Texas A&amp;M Kingsville se centr\u00f3 en la autotolerancia de las <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/el-veneno-de-las-serpientes-es-diferente-segun-su-entorno-y-su-presa\">serpientes de cascabel<\/a> y otras a su propio veneno. Si bien se sab\u00eda desde hace m\u00e1s de 100 a\u00f1os que las v\u00edboras hab\u00edan desarrollado resistencia a su veneno, el mecanismo subyacente permaneci\u00f3 en gran medida desconocido durante mucho tiempo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEl problema con el que hemos estado lidiando durante d\u00e9cadas ya hab\u00eda sido resuelto por la naturaleza\u201d, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/cmns.umd.edu\/news-events\/news\/Sean-Carroll-biology-snakebite-antivenom-proteins-PNAS\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/cmns.umd.edu\/news-events\/news\/Sean-Carroll-biology-snakebite-antivenom-proteins-PNAS&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/cmns.umd.edu\/news-events\/news\/Sean-Carroll-biology-snakebite-antivenom-proteins-PNAS\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explica<\/a> Sean B. Carroll, profesor de la Universidad de Maryland quien dirigi\u00f3 la investigaci\u00f3n. \u201cSe trata de un producto evolutivo que las serpientes han desarrollado para protegerse cuando se exponen a su propio veneno\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>M\u00faltiples prote\u00ednas con funciones diferentes<\/h2>\n<p>En 2022, Carroll y su equipo descubrieron una prote\u00edna llamada \u00abFETUA-3\u00bb en la sangre de una serpiente de cascabel diamantina occidental. Esta prote\u00edna inhibe la actividad de la metaloproteinasa, una enzima presente en el veneno de serpiente. Se cree que protege al animal de las hemorragias y los da\u00f1os tisulares causados \u200b\u200bpor el veneno.<\/p>\n<p>En este nuevo estudio, el equipo de investigaci\u00f3n <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2612168123\" target=\"_blank\">analiz\u00f3<\/a> individualmente las funciones de cinco prote\u00ednas FETUA diferentes, incluida la FETUA-3. Los resultados arrojaron que cada prote\u00edna tiene una funci\u00f3n distinta. Por ejemplo, una prote\u00edna FETUA suprime el sangrado, mientras que otra inhibe la actividad enzim\u00e1tica de las toxinas.<\/p>\n<p>Estudios de laboratorio con ratones demostraron que la FETUA-2 por s\u00ed sola suprimi\u00f3 completamente el sangrado, mientras que ninguna de las prote\u00ednas pudo individualmente prevenir por completo los efectos letales. Sin embargo, la combinaci\u00f3n de FETUA-2 y FETUA-3 neutraliz\u00f3 por completo el veneno de la serpiente de cascabel diamantina occidental. Adem\u00e1s, con la adici\u00f3n de FETUA-5, la cantidad necesaria para neutralizar el veneno fue aproximadamente una d\u00e9cima parte de la cantidad de ant\u00eddoto comercial derivado de ovejas.<\/p>\n<h2>Es eficaz contra el veneno de serpientes de especies distantes evolutivamente<\/h2>\n<p>Lo m\u00e1s destacable es que este efecto protector ha demostrado ser eficaz contra m\u00e1s especies que la cascabel diamantina occidental. Seg\u00fan los investigadores, previno parcial o totalmente los efectos letales tambi\u00e9n contra el veneno de la v\u00edbora malaya, la cascabel centenaria y la serpiente dentada, especies evolutivamente muy distantes. Si bien la combinaci\u00f3n de prote\u00ednas FETUA necesaria para neutralizar las toxinas var\u00eda seg\u00fan la especie de serpiente, se cree que el mecanismo de inhibici\u00f3n de las metaloproteinasas es com\u00fan a todas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEl hecho de que algunos de estos inhibidores se hayan conservado a la perfecci\u00f3n durante 50 millones de a\u00f1os de evoluci\u00f3n de las serpientes dice mucho sobre lo real que era el riesgo de exposici\u00f3n a su propio veneno para estos animales\u201d, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/cmns.umd.edu\/news-events\/news\/Sean-Carroll-biology-snakebite-antivenom-proteins-PNAS\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/cmns.umd.edu\/news-events\/news\/Sean-Carroll-biology-snakebite-antivenom-proteins-PNAS&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/cmns.umd.edu\/news-events\/news\/Sean-Carroll-biology-snakebite-antivenom-proteins-PNAS\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">afirma<\/a> Carol.
