La instalaci\u00f3n emplear\u00e1 tecnolog\u00eda de \u00f3smosis inversa para convertir grandes cantidades de agua de mar en agua potable, con una capacidad de producci\u00f3n de hasta 380,000 metros c\u00fabicos diarios.<\/p>\n<p>La construcci\u00f3n fue adjudicada a la empresa espa\u00f1ola Grupo Cox por la Comisi\u00f3n Nacional del Agua (Conagua) mediante un concurso p\u00fablico. Para ello, recurrir\u00e1 a una tecnolog\u00eda que durante las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas se ha utilizado para enfrentar la escasez de agua en distintas partes del mundo, aunque <strong>tambi\u00e9n implica elevados costos energ\u00e9ticos y ciertos retos ambientales.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>\u00bfC\u00f3mo funciona la \u00f3smosis inversa?<\/h2>\n<p>Desde hace <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/estabamos-equivocados-con-la-osmosis-inversa-hasta-ahora\">aproximadamente 30 a\u00f1os<\/a>, la \u00f3smosis inversa se emplea como uno de los principales m\u00e9todos para desalinizar agua de mar. A diferencia del proceso natural de la \u00f3smosis, esta tecnolog\u00eda consiste en aplicar presi\u00f3n sobre el agua con una alta concentraci\u00f3n de sales para obligar a las mol\u00e9culas de H2O a atravesar una membrana artificial, que permite separar las sales, los iones y otras sustancias disueltas.<\/p>\n<p>Las membranas utilizadas con mayor frecuencia est\u00e1n fabricadas con poliamidas y estructuras compuestas de pel\u00edcula delgada. No obstante, la separaci\u00f3n eficaz de los compuestos depende tanto de las caracter\u00edsticas de la membrana como de las propiedades f\u00edsicas y qu\u00edmicas de los elementos que se busca separar.<\/p>\n<p>Por ello, en instalaciones de gran escala <strong>es necesario realizar un pretratamiento del agua<\/strong> que se pretende purificar, con el prop\u00f3sito de eliminar part\u00edculas suspendidas, materia org\u00e1nica, microorganismos y otros compuestos que podr\u00edan comprometer el funcionamiento de las membranas.<\/p>\n<p>Posteriormente, se utilizan bombas de alta presi\u00f3n que impulsan el agua hacia m\u00f3dulos de membranas para obtener dos corrientes de l\u00edquido. La primera se conoce como permeado y corresponde al agua que, con una menor concentraci\u00f3n de sales y otros compuestos, logra atravesar la membrana. La segunda, denominada salmuera, concentra las sales y otros residuos que fueron retenidos durante el proceso y que no son aptos para el consumo humano.<\/p>\n<p>Cabe destacar que, en una planta desaladora, la presi\u00f3n ejercida sobre el agua depende de su concentraci\u00f3n de salinidad. <strong>En el caso de la desalinizaci\u00f3n de agua de mar, las presiones pueden superar las 1,000 libras por pulgada cuadrada (PSI).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan la Agencia de Protecci\u00f3n Ambiental de Estados Unidos (EPA), adem\u00e1s de utilizarse para retirar sales del agua de mar y del agua salobre, la \u00f3smosis inversa puede remover s\u00f3lidos disueltos, numerosas sustancias inorg\u00e1nicas, radion\u00faclidos y determinados compuestos org\u00e1nicos sint\u00e9ticos.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, el organismo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sdwa\/overview-drinking-water-treatment-technologies?utm_source=chatgpt.com#RO\">reconoce<\/a> que los sistemas basados en esta tecnolog\u00eda pueden generar hasta 30% de salmuera respecto del agua que tratan, dependiendo del dise\u00f1o y las condiciones de operaci\u00f3n de cada planta.<\/p>\n<h2>Mucha energ\u00eda, grandes residuos<\/h2>\n<p>Es importante no pasar por alto los altos niveles de consumo energ\u00e9tico en diversas etapas del proceso. Las plantas industriales que utilizan \u00f3smosis inversa para desalinizar agua de mar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S030626191931339X?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">suelen consumir<\/a> entre 2.5 y 4.0 kilovatios-hora por cada metro c\u00fabico (kWh\/m3) de agua producida.
