El hallazgo abre una posible v\u00eda para recuperar parte de la capacidad de producir insulina que se pierde o resulta insuficiente en la diabetes, aunque todav\u00eda est\u00e1 lejos de convertirse en un tratamiento.<\/p>\n<p>El trabajo se centr\u00f3 en las c\u00e9lulas ductales, que forman parte de los conductos del p\u00e1ncreas. Tienen una funci\u00f3n diferente a las c\u00e9lulas beta, encargadas de producir insulina. El deterioro o destrucci\u00f3n de estas \u00faltimas desempe\u00f1a un papel fundamental en la <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/la-ia-ayudara-a-detectar-la-diabetes-anos-antes\">diabetes<\/a>, as\u00ed que recuperar su funci\u00f3n o aumentar su n\u00famero se ha convertido en una prometedora estrategia para tratar la enfermedad.<\/p>\n<p>A trav\u00e9s de manipulaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica, los investigadores descubrieron que eliminar la funci\u00f3n de un gen llamado <em>ALDH3B2<\/em> pod\u00eda cambiar la identidad de algunas c\u00e9lulas ductales. Lo que surg\u00eda eran c\u00e9lulas similares a las beta, capaces de producir y liberar insulina en respuesta a la glucosa.<\/p>\n<p>De acuerdo con los autores, las c\u00e9lulas ductales del <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/la-academia-de-ciencias-de-ee-uu-ordena-retirar-estudio-espanol-sobre-terapia-contra-cancer-de-pancreas\">p\u00e1ncreas<\/a> tienen cierta plasticidad. En las condiciones estudiadas, menos del 1% adquiere espont\u00e1neamente caracter\u00edsticas similares a las de una c\u00e9lula beta. Al silenciar <em>ALDH3B2<\/em>, esa proporci\u00f3n aument\u00f3 hasta alrededor del 8.5% en c\u00e9lulas humanas.<\/p>\n<p>Para comprobar si funcionaban dentro de un organismo, los investigadores trasplantaron esas c\u00e9lulas humanas modificadas a ratones inmunodeficientes a los que previamente se les hab\u00eda inducido diabetes. Despu\u00e9s del procedimiento detectaron insulina humana y observaron que la glucosa de los animales descendi\u00f3 hasta niveles cercanos a los normales. Algunos tratamientos experimentales, por ejemplo, buscan obtener nuevas c\u00e9lulas productoras de insulina en el laboratorio y despu\u00e9s trasplantarlas al paciente. Es una estrategia prometedora, pero implica una complejidad t\u00e9cnica que, por ahora, no es pr\u00e1ctica.<\/p>\n<p>Este estudio apunta hacia otra posibilidad, la de aprovechar las c\u00e9lulas que ya existen en el p\u00e1ncreas y hacerlas cambiar de funci\u00f3n, apagando algunos de los interruptores gen\u00e9ticos que mantienen su identidad. El experimento todav\u00eda no consigui\u00f3 hacerlo directamente dentro del p\u00e1ncreas, pero admiten que es un inicio.<\/p>\n<p><em>ALDH3B2<\/em> podr\u00eda ofrecer una v\u00eda para alcanzar alg\u00fan d\u00eda ese objetivo. El gen produce una enzima, por lo que los investigadores plantean la posibilidad de desarrollar un f\u00e1rmaco que bloquee su actividad y provoque una transformaci\u00f3n similar sin necesidad de modificar gen\u00e9ticamente las c\u00e9lulas con t\u00e9cnicas de edici\u00f3n como <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/la-pionera-de-crispr-busca-hacer-realidad-terapias-geneticas-personalizadas\">CRISPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNuestro estudio identifica un gen que potencialmente podr\u00eda ser atacado en las c\u00e9lulas del conducto pancre\u00e1tico humano para reponer la masa celular \u03b2 para la terapia de la diabetes\u201d, finalizan los autores en su trabajo publicado este mes en <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/scitranslmed.ady2234\"><em>Science Translational Medicine<\/em>.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Seg\u00fan la Federaci\u00f3n Internacional de Diabetes (IDF), unos 589 millones de adultos de entre 20 y 79 a\u00f1os viv\u00edan con diabetes en 2024, aproximadamente uno de cada nueve en el mundo. La organizaci\u00f3n estima que la cifra alcanzar\u00e1 los 853 millones para 2050.
