Por ahora parece una tarea imposible, aunque poco a poco perfeccionan sus t\u00e9cnicas. De hecho, hay un nuevo m\u00e9todo de an\u00e1lisis del terreno que afirma poder responder a una de esas grandes preguntas que conforman una predicci\u00f3n, con un considerable grado de confianza.<\/p>\n<p>El modelo desarrollado por investigadores de la Universidad de California (UC) en Riverside parece ser capaz de identificar d\u00f3nde se ha acumulado tensi\u00f3n a lo largo de las grandes fallas geol\u00f3gicas. Mediante el an\u00e1lisis del lento movimiento del terreno, indican los investigadores, es posible determinar en qu\u00e9 zonas es m\u00e1s probable que ocurra una <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/la-amenaza-de-un-gran-terremoto-crece-en-california-por-la-tension-acumulada-en-la-falla-de-san-andres\">ruptura<\/a> con el potencial de producir un gran terremoto.<\/p>\n<p>El m\u00e9todo pas\u00f3 una primera prueba en Kamchatka. El 30 de julio de 2025, una ruptura en una falla provoc\u00f3 un sismo de magnitud 8.8 frente a esta pen\u00ednsula de Rusia oriental. Tras el evento, cient\u00edficos reconstruyeron por medio de diferentes observaciones qu\u00e9 partes de la falla se hab\u00edan deslizado. Su m\u00e9todo utiliza mediciones GNSS, la tecnolog\u00eda de posicionamiento por sat\u00e9lite, para detectar c\u00f3mo se mueve lentamente el terreno. Esos desplazamientos permiten inferir qu\u00e9 partes de una falla permanecen atoradas mientras las placas tect\u00f3nicas contin\u00faan avanzando a su alrededor, acumulando tensi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>La diferencia con respecto a modelos anteriores est\u00e1 en que el algoritmo no necesita que los investigadores le indiquen previamente d\u00f3nde buscar esas zonas bloqueadas. Examina diferentes posibilidades y calcula qu\u00e9 partes de la falla tienen mayor probabilidad de permanecer atoradas. En Kamchatka encontr\u00f3 una gran regi\u00f3n que coincidi\u00f3 con buena parte de la ruptura de 2025 y con zonas afectadas por otro gigantesco terremoto, de magnitud 9.0, ocurrido en 1952.<\/p>\n<p>Aunque el resultado en Kamchatka fue prometedor, la prueba todav\u00eda est\u00e1 lejos de demostrar que el m\u00e9todo pueda <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/deepmind-afirma-que-su-ia-puede-predecir-los-huracanes-antes-que-nadie\">predecir<\/a> una futura ruptura. El estudio muestra que la informaci\u00f3n disponible antes de un temblor permite reconstruir zonas que posteriormente resultaron importantes durante el sismo, pero no fue una predicci\u00f3n en sentido estricto.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab[En Kamchatka] ten\u00edamos una idea de d\u00f3nde se estaba acumulando la tensi\u00f3n basada en un conjunto de datos relativamente limitado. Con mejores observaciones y monitoreo continuo, podemos aprender mucho m\u00e1s sobre las fallas m\u00e1s peligrosas de la Tierra\u201d, concluy\u00f3 el autor.<\/p>\n<p>El m\u00e9todo puede ser particularmente relevante para las zonas de subducci\u00f3n, donde una placa tect\u00f3nica se introduce debajo de otra. Estas zonas recorren lugares como Jap\u00f3n, Kamchatka, Alaska, M\u00e9xico, Chile, Indonesia y Nueva Zelanda, y son capaces de producir los terremotos m\u00e1s poderosos conocidos. Como pueden extenderse cientos de kil\u00f3metros, incluso bajo el oc\u00e9ano, identificar cu\u00e1les de sus segmentos permanecen atorados y acumulando tensi\u00f3n permitir\u00eda reducir el mapa de peligro y precisar qu\u00e9 zonas tienen mayor potencial para participar en una futura gran ruptura.<\/p>\n<p>Kamchatka es apenas un primer caso. De acuerdo con la UC Riverside, el equipo ya est\u00e1 aplicando el m\u00e9todo a zonas de subducci\u00f3n de Jap\u00f3n, M\u00e9xico, Nueva Zelanda y el noroeste del Pac\u00edfico.
