Guerrero<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El milagro del Santo Cerro no fue la aparici\u00f3n de la Virgen de las Mercedes en una batalla de 1495 en la que los espa\u00f1oles derrotaron a los indios por su intercesi\u00f3n.&nbsp; La batalla no se realiz\u00f3 en ese lugar de La Vega, sino en Esperanza como lo prob\u00f3 Apolinar Tejera en 1908 y la ubic\u00f3 recientemente Edwin Espinal en el Batey No. 1 Usamita. Nada dijeron del supuesto milagro Col\u00f3n, Pan\u00e9, Angler\u00eda, Ovando, Las Casas, Oviedo ni Pedro Su\u00e1rez Deza, el obispo de la Vega entre 1513-1522.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La vinculaci\u00f3n de Las Mercedes con el milagro del Santo Cerro es tard\u00eda y quienes primero la mencionaron en ese rol en libros de texto fueron los historiadores Del Monte y Tejada en 1853, Jos\u00e9 Gabriel Garc\u00eda en 1894 y Bernardo Pichardo en 1922. Su culto en el Santo Cerro tom\u00f3 fuerza despu\u00e9s de 1853-1857 cuando el cura vegano Dionisio de Moya repar\u00f3 el santuario y se construy\u00f3 la iglesia actual en 1888.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El milagro del Santo Cerro combina anacr\u00f3nicamente una cruz colombina de 1494, batallas indo-hisp\u00e1nicas de 1495 y 1497, el prodigio de una mujer vestida de blanco con un ni\u00f1o en el siglo XVI identificada con la Virgen de las Mercedes en el siglo XIX, un capell\u00e1n que nunca vino a la isla y la celebraci\u00f3n de la fiesta mercedaria el 24 de septiembre a partir de 1734 y, en el Santo Cerro, a partir de 1853 y 1888. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La cruz del Santo Cerro, plantada por Col\u00f3n y venerada por espa\u00f1oles e indios, la mencionaron Diego Col\u00f3n en 1520 quien orden\u00f3 cubrir \u201cla cruz de palo que est\u00e1 en el Cerro de la Concepci\u00f3n\u201d y una relaci\u00f3n de 1525 que registr\u00f3 \u201cla cruz que puso el Almirante en un cerro\u201d y la aparici\u00f3n de \u201cuna mujer de Castilla encima de la cruz vista por los indios\u201d. No se mencion\u00f3 batalla, ni milagro, ni Virgen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El milagro de la cruz del Santo Cerro se hizo popular despu\u00e9s que un terremoto que destruy\u00f3 a la ciudad de La Vega en 1562 dej\u00f3 intacto el lugar donde ella estaba. Como serv\u00eda para la protecci\u00f3n contra sismos y tempestades, el palo de la cruz se cort\u00f3 y s\u00f3lo qued\u00f3 una cruz que est\u00e1 hoy en el Museo de la catedral de Santo Domingo. Dicho milagro se conoci\u00f3 en Espa\u00f1a y Am\u00e9rica despu\u00e9s que el cronista Antonio de Herrera registr\u00f3 en 1601 \u201cuna fortaleza construida por Col\u00f3n al pie del Cerro Grande y una cruz que no pudo ser quemada ni derribada por los indios, quienes vieron a una hermosa y venerable mujer en un brazo de la cruz\u201d. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La popularidad de la Virgen de las Mercedes se debe a que fue declarada patrona de la isla y de la ciudad de Santo Domingo en 1617 por proteger milagrosamente a los fieles durante un terremoto y un cicl\u00f3n. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Es preciso detener la falsa acusaci\u00f3n hecha a la virgen mercedaria de haber propiciado la matanza de indios en 1495 y conmemorar con honor y fervor su protecci\u00f3n dada al pueblo dominicano en la lucha contra ingleses en 1655, contra franceses en 1691 y 1808, contra haitianos en 1855 y contra espa\u00f1oles en 1865. Se le aclam\u00f3 el 27 de febrero de 1844 con \u00a1Viva la Rep\u00fablica Dominicana! \u00a1Viva la Virgen de Las Mercedes! &nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Por Jos\u00e9 G.
