Carmen Julia tiene 27 a\u00f1os y se retuerce de dolor en los huesos; el c\u00e1ncer la est\u00e1 consumiendo. Lleg\u00f3 al hospital con un sangrado vaginal abundante. El diagn\u00f3stico fue c\u00e1ncer de cuello uterino. Le indicaron morfina, pero ya agot\u00f3 su seguro y no tiene c\u00f3mo comprarla. Hasta para morir, en la Rep\u00fablica Dominicana, hay que tener suerte.<\/p>\n<p>A pesar de ser el c\u00e1ncer de cuello uterino uno de los c\u00e1nceres m\u00e1s prevenibles del mundo, en nuestro pa\u00eds sigue siendo la segunda causa de c\u00e1ncer en mujeres y el segundo m\u00e1s frecuente entre las de 15 a 44 a\u00f1os. Este c\u00e1ncer no aparece de la nada: en la mayor\u00eda de los casos es consecuencia de una infecci\u00f3n persistente por el Virus del Papiloma Humano (VPH).<\/p>\n<p>La prevenci\u00f3n deber\u00eda ser la primera l\u00ednea de defensa. Entre los factores de riesgo se encuentran el tipo de VPH, la presencia de otras infecciones de transmisi\u00f3n sexual, el embarazo a edad temprana, el tabaquismo y un sistema de defensas debilitado.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183150\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183150\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-183150\" src=\"https:\/\/almomento.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/LILLIAN-FONDEUR-320x240-300x225.jpg\" alt width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/almomento.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/LILLIAN-FONDEUR-320x240-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/almomento.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/LILLIAN-FONDEUR-320x240-45x35.jpg 45w, https:\/\/almomento.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/LILLIAN-FONDEUR-320x240.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">La autora es m\u00e9dico. Reside en Santo Domingo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Est\u00e1 demostrado que el uso correcto del preservativo reduce el riesgo de infecciones de transmisi\u00f3n sexual, incluido el VPH. Aun as\u00ed, el Ministerio de Salud P\u00fablica y Asistencia Social (MISPAS) se resiste a promoverlo de forma clara y sostenida dentro de sus pol\u00edticas de educaci\u00f3n y prevenci\u00f3n. Demandar su uso sigue siendo, para sectores de poder, una afrenta.<\/p>\n<p>Persisten m\u00faltiples barreras: falta de informaci\u00f3n, miedo, escasos recursos y deficiencias en los centros del Servicio Nacional de Salud, donde el Papanicolaou no se realiza o los resultados llegan tarde o nunca llegan. Las pruebas de VPH no se ofrecen en centros p\u00fablicos. Como consecuencia, el c\u00e1ncer se detecta en etapas avanzadas, los tratamientos son m\u00e1s costosos y la mortalidad es mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Carmen Julia nunca supo la importancia del preservativo, de evitar el embarazo en la adolescencia ni de realizarse el Papanicolaou. En su imaginario no existe la prueba de VPH. A ella y a las 714 mujeres que mueren cada a\u00f1o por esta enfermedad, seg\u00fan estimaciones del MISPAS (2022\u20132023), les fall\u00f3 el sistema de salud. Les fall\u00f3 el Estado.<\/p>\n<p>Mientras las autoridades proclaman \u201cel progreso\u201d, las mujeres siguen muriendo de enfermedades propias de pa\u00edses de bajos ingresos.
